Women’s Tennis Drops 4-0 Decision To Villanova, Ends BIG EAST Championship Run In Quarterfinals

2 min read

CAYCE, S.C. — The Creighton women’s tennis team ended its stay at the 2021 BIG EAST Championship Presented by JEEP with a 4-0 loss to No. 3 seed Villanova during the quarterfinals on Friday morning at the Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center.

The Bluejays ended their season with a 10-6 overall record, while the Wildcats improved to 7-3 and advanced to Saturday’s semifinal round.

Villanova took the doubles point with victories at the top two positions. The Wildcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead in doubles play with a 6-1 win at the top slot. The Bluejays evened the first portion of the match as Malvika Shukla and Erin Epperson combined for a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles. Villanova secured the first point of the match with a 6-1 win at the No. 2 position.

Creighton earned two first-set wins during singles action, but Villanova won in straight-sets at the No. 1, 2 and 6 positions to end the match.

Epperson won 6-4 in the first set at No. 5 singles, while Shukla posted a 7-5 victory during the first frame at No. 3.

Joanna Nowakowska fell in a tiebreaker during the first set at the No. 4 position.

“We had a few unfortunate deuce points in doubles that could have swung some momentum our way and just didn’t get enough going in all the singles matches,” head coach Tom Lilly said. “We had two first sets and lost another in a breaker, so the match could have been much closer, but Villanova was too strong today.

“I am impressed with how these girls handled this strange season with all the protocols for COVID placed on them. They are a great group of young women and we will miss our seniors very much.”

Friday morning marked the final collegiate match for both Nowakowska and Epperson, as well as the completion of careers for Julia Aguirre and Laura Higueras
